Professional Bio
Dr. Dawit Haile is Professor of Computer Science and Mathematics at Virginia State University (VSU), where he serves as Dean of the College of Engineering and Technology and Interim Provost for Academic Affairs. With over 30 years of experience in industry and academia, he has held faculty positions at Xavier University and Southern Illinois University. As Chair of VSU’s Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Dr. Haile launched undergraduate and graduate programs in computer science and advanced research capacity in machine learning, data mining, and cybersecurity. He has received multiple honors, including the Bank of America Outstanding Faculty Award.
His research expertise includes combinatorics, graph theory, neural networks, and applications of data and graph mining. He has published extensively, contributed book chapters, chaired conferences, and secured more than $30 million in grants for research and program development.
Beyond VSU, Dr. Haile is Vice Chair of the Board for the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Interim President and Executive Director of the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Logistics Systems. He also serves on the Commonwealth’s Manufacturing Development Commission, where he is in his third four-year term, and on the Southeastern Universities Research Association Coastal and Environmental Research Committee.
He is an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Society for Engineering Education, Global Engineering Deans Council, American Mathematical Society, Mathematical Association of America, IEEE, and SIAM.
Dr. Haile earned his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Southern Illinois University, an M.S. in Computer Science from Virginia Commonwealth University, and an M.S. in Mathematics from Addis Ababa University. He lives in Chester, Virginia, with his wife and two children.
