Professional Bio

Alex Wermer-Colan is cofounder and Executive Director of Philly Community Wireless, a community-controlled internet network, making available free, open access in public spaces, private residences, and nonprofit organizations in North Philadelphia. Alex is also the Academic and Research Director of Temple University Libraries' Loretta C. Duckworth Scholars Studio, where he directs and advises teaching and research with emerging technologies across the disciplines. In 2022, Technical.ly Philly named Alex Tech Community Leader of the Year, and more recently, his writing on digital equity and community-owned infrastructure appeared in "Alternative Infrastructures for Digital Equity: Community-Based Internet Access" in Debates in the Digital Humanities (2026).
